Weather
Due to an extremely varied topography, the weather in Ecuador is usually considered to be very difficult to predict. This varied topography of Ecuador provides a micro climatic condition. Different factors in each region influence the climate of that area. While a proximity to warm or cool ocean currents influence the climate of the Costa (the coast), the weather of Sierra changes according to the altitude. A uniform climate can be experienced in the Oriente with slight variation between its two sub-regions and the climate of the Galapagos Islands can be both affected by the altitude and moderated by the ocean currents.
The variation of rainfall in Ecuador is the major factor that determines the season whereas the altitude of the various regions determines the temperature.
1. Best Times to Go
Mid June to early September and again from late December to early January are considered to be the best times for planning a trip to Ecuador. The place is crowded during these seasons due to American and European vacationers and most of the cruises in the Galapagos Island are also booked. However, in spite of the rush, rooms (or berths in the ships) are usually always available all through the year, even during the peak seasons.
2. What to Wear
Packing for Ecuador depends on the area or region that you have planned to visit extensively. However, for all the regions, it is essential to ensure clothing and accessories that are comfortable and that prove useful according to the climatic variations and weather changes.
While visiting the Galapagos Island and the coastal regions tourists need to bring lightweight dresses suitable for the warm climates. Sunglasses, sunscreens and sun hats are a must for protecting yourself from the glares of the sun. Tennis shoes, shorts and sandals are ideal for such climates. For nights that are comparatively cooler, windbreakers and lightweight jackets can be useful. Tourists interested in water sports and swimming can also carry bathing suits, snorkels and masks. However, these things can also be rented in Puerto Ayora or Quito. A mosquito and bug repellant is an absolutely necessity.
During your trip to the Andes Mountains, it is necessary to carry warm jackets and coats made of materials that dry up quickly. Boots and all weather waterproof shoes can be very useful.
A trip to the Sierra would require warm clothing for the higher lands and comfortable t-shirts for the warm sunny days, complemented by all weather comfortable shoes.
If you are traveling to the jungles of the Oriente region, light sweaters (not more than two) for the chilly nights can be sufficient. Fast drying materials are the most ideal for the atmospheric conditions. Lots of cotton socks are essential, including a good quality rain jacket, as it is almost obvious to experience rain in this region. Good quality waterproof hiking boots are also necessary.
