Shopping

Israel is a shopper's paradise for tourists. There are a number of genuinely good buys to be made here. Tourists should keep in mind that custom duties are eliminated due to trade and tariff agreements with several countries.

Jewelry is the most favored shopping item among tourists. Diamond and precious gemstone industry is well established here. Leather accessories and furs, religious articles, works of art, registered antiques and antiquities and carpets are some of the other sought after items. Bargaining is also expected by most shop owners, more so in the Arab markets, where it is the expected norm.

Food is best bought from outdoor markets or Shuk, as it is fresh and cheap.

Leather goods can be bought from shops that are listed by the Ministry of Tourism. Tourists who pay in foreign currency are excused from VAT and also get an additional 25 per cent discount on leather goods.

Shopping hours are from eight in the morning to seven in the evening. Some of the shops are closed from 1-4 in the afternoons while some close early for prayers on Friday.

Jewish stores typically close near sunset on Friday evenings before Shabbat (Saturday) while Arabic stores observe closures on Friday. Sunday is a normal working day in Israel unlike the western countries, which can be used by the tourists and shoppers to their advantage.
