Shopping

Istanbul's claim to fame is trade and thus shopping is a cheap and quaint here. A peculiarity of the shopping experience lies in the fact that there are no large stores. Goods are available at stalls on the roadside and open-air markets, which give you the shopping experience of an era bygone. Be sure to stock up on Mediterranean spices, perfumes and silks while in Turkey.

Also the rule when shopping in the streets is to keep an open mind and always bargain for the product at half price.

Miisir Carsisi (The Egyptian Spice Bazaar)

This market was originally built in the seventeenth century and since then has been renovated and restored. This is the place to purchase exotic spices very cheaply and some traditional medicines and goods. It houses about 86 shops inside and has six separate entrances.

Kapalicarsi (The Grand Bazaar)

This market has everything people need in one place from the freshest of vegetables to the tender meats. There are over 3000 shops arranged in a grid like fashion for convenience. Various cafes and restaurants are also located within the Grand Bazaar.

Sipahi Carsisi (Arasta Bazaar)

A small center for traditional and locally produced articles. This one works 365 days a year.

Sahaflar Carsisi

This is the place to buy second hand literature since original books in Turkey can be quite expensive.
