Dining

Food in Malaysia is a unique feature and just like everything else in the country, it is also reflective of its culture. Each ethnic group has its own distinct cuisine and each cuisine is available in various places. The food is always prepared with fresh ingredients and can be spicy or bland depending upon cuisine. The culinary delights include a colorful mix of vegetables and meats with various sauces and curries as accompaniment. Rice is a major feature of all cooking styles being the staple crop of Malaysia.

A special feature of dining in Malaysia is Hawker food. Most hawkers in Malaysia are licensed and health authorities constantly check the quality of food. They sell some of the best, and diverse food preparations in Malaysia. The food is freshly prepared and is very affordable. Food is available in three portion sizes with hawkers - large, medium, small and is priced based on portions served. People can ask for extras on their dishes for a small over charge. The real interesting part is to see them prepare the food in open air. You are recommended to try ‘Teh Tarik' at the hawkers, which is a creamy, smooth version of tea.

Malay Cuisine

Malay cuisine is a veritable cornucopia of flavors since it uses a lot of traditional, Indian and Chinese spices. The seasoning is always fresh and meats such as beef, chicken and fish are used in plenty. Coconut milk is generally used to thicken curries or for flavoring and those allergic to it must be careful to mention so to the restaurateur. Recommended dishes include Nasi Dagang - a rice/coconut preparation, Ayam Goreng - a chicken dish and Keping - a fried snack.

Chinese Cuisine

Visitors can experience delicately prepared food that is exquisitely presented. Chinese cuisine is all about variety and you will find a range of seafood, poultry and meats under this section. The food is also of medicinal value since many preparations are thought to cure ailments right from the common cold to heart disease. A special request however is to refrain from consuming foodstuffs like shark fin soup since the ingredients are brutally obtained from a dwindling population of endangered animals.

Indian Cuisine

Again a very spice-loving community, Indians prepare their food with love and care to see that each bite is as tasty as it is nutritious. Here the rampant use of rice to some extent is replaced with wheat, a far more popular grain in India. The food tends to be very hot and people with sensitive stomachs should stay away. A recommended try is the Indian version of barbeque - the Tandoor.
