Shopping in Malta is colorful with markets for fresh fish, attractive old shops in the back streets of Valletta, and the latest fashion trends in shopping plazas.
In Malta and Gozo, banks almost always offer the best rates possible to exchange currency. These islands accept all major credit cards. Bargaining for handicrafts at stalls or markets is a regular affair. M&S, BHS, Coin and Standa, common retailers in UK and Italy have their own franchises in Malta. McDonalds and Burger King are yet to set shop here. Local as well as foreign artists have been inspired by the rich landscape of the Maltese island. The Fondazzjoni Patrimonju Malti, a Maltese heritage foundation holds exhibitions for Maltese art, antiques and artifacts. Enquiries on local contemporary artists can be made with the Center of Creativity, St. James Cavalier, Valletta as well as with the National Museum of Fine Arts, Valletta.
Valletta and Sliema bookstores have the best collection of books and maps on Malta. Other stores to watch out for are the Manoel Theatre Bookshop, Old Theatre Street and Valletta.
Craftsmen in Malta are world renowned for their gold and silver work on broaches, bracelets, earrings etc.
There are handcrafted glasses available all across the island. Best buys include vases and figurines. Basket ware and wickerwork are the most sought after local crafts. Maltese homes are furnished with cane blinds and hasira on doors and windows. Woolen weaved rugs are also some of the other best buys here.
