Romantic Mauritius
Mauritius is one of the most romantic places in the world with beautiful islands lined with palm and casuarinas, and miles of coral reefs formed under crystal-clear waters. The fertile island of Mauritius is characterized by fields of sugarcane that dominate the landscape; lush green tropical forests; huge craters and gorges, and breathtaking waterfalls against the backdrop of volcanic mountain ranges. The climate is more or less the same all throughout the year with a lot of sunshine in summers as well as winters. The only natural factor that disturbs the serenity of this place is perhaps the hurricanes that descend on the island from time to time.
It is a tiny island that measures a mere 36 miles in length and 25 miles at its widest point. It lies in the vast expanse of the Indian Ocean, some 1265 miles from the coast of Africa. Its location is unique, as there is no landmass between the island and the Australian subcontinent. Although commercialization has spread to the island, many areas have been preserved in their original form in order to attract tourists, since tourism is the main industry in Mauritius. Apart from the silvery beaches, the island has a well-developed tourist infrastructure consisting of quality hotels and restaurants. The forests in the island are home to some of the most rare birds. It is legal to hunt wild boars and deer. Botanical gardens located on the island display a vast variety of trees and shrubs growing on the island. Nature reserves and bird sanctuaries allow you to view some of the rare inhabitants of the island like the Pink Pigeon.
The island has a well-developed public transportation system with well-maintained roads, efficient services, and cheap fares. The abundance of locally available fruits, vegetables, and seafood has enabled hotels and restaurants to offer delicious dining options to visitors, as well as the locals. The number of restaurants offering ethnic cuisine has increased over the years, but French cuisine still occupies a dominant position as far as restaurants are concerned. The island's population mainly consists of people from India and minorities of Creole, Chinese and Europeans who are warm and friendly. Although English is the official language, French and Creole are also used in some parts of the island. The climate is mainly tropical with constant southeast winds bringing down the temperature during summers. These winds also provide the basic ingredient for sailing and windsurfing, which are very popular sports on the island.
Port Louis, the capital of Mauritius is a flourishing port, commercial center, and the main shopping center on the island. Most of the shops in the area are duty free. The numerous monuments in the area reflect the history of the island whereas mosques, temples, pagoda and cathedrals are a testament to its multi-ethnic heritage.
The island has everything that is required for making a perfect holiday such as a serene environment and recreational activities ranging from water sports to golf, nightclubs, and casinos.
