Moscow is located in the middle of the continent and so is characterized by continental temperatures. July and August are the hottest months with maximum temperatures of 86o F to 95o F. The last few days of September indicate the end of the summer season. Autumn starts in October when temperatures can drop to zero by the end of the month. Mid November is when it starts snowing. January and February witness the most snowfall. February is the coldest month of the year with temperatures falling to below freezing point to about 5o F.

March marks the arrival of spring with increasing temperatures. It becomes warmer by April (50 to 60o Fahrenheit). Temperatures rise abruptly towards the end of April. By May it reaches 68o Fahrenheit.

Moscow sees very little rainfall, most of its precipitation falling as snow.

1. Best Times to Go

If you are prepared and can be adventurous, the winter months of November and December are the best time of the year to visit Moscow. However, the months of July and August are peak seasons for tourists to visit the city. Warm temperatures with little rainfall offer the best setting for sightseeing and outdoor activities. If you are visiting Moscow during these months, be sure to book reservations well in advance. Hotel, taxi and dining services are generally expensive during these months.

Visitors can also enjoy early autumn with its colorful foliage during the month of October.

2. What to Wear

While visiting Moscow during the summer, carry light clothing for the days along with a raincoat. For the nights, it is advisable to carry warm clothes. Winters can get extremely cold in Moscow so carry warm clothes like sweaters, jackets and mufflers. Be sure to carry an umbrella for snow protection. Shoes should be strong and comfortable at the same time.

While visiting churches and theaters, wear formal clothes and cover your shoulders and wrists. Ladies are advised to wear long skirts and scarves.
