40 Vacations - Travel Guides - Destination Santori
Weather
The weather in Santorini is mostly Mediterranean with extended periods of sunshine all throughout the year, accompanied with mild and rainy winters. The island has two main seasons: the dry and warm season that starts from April and continues till October and the cold and rainy season that commences from November and continues till March. The most interesting aspect of the rainy season is that the rain does not last for many days at a stretch even in winter months and the sky does not remain cloudy all the time. During the summers, the weather is generally constant with clear skies, bright sunshine, and little rainfall. The heat during the summers is reduced considerably by the northerly winds known as the meltemi.

1. Best Times to Go
The best time to visit the island is probably between Easter and June when the beaches and historical sites are relatively less crowded, the public transport system is fully operational and getting accommodation is both easier and cheaper. If you have a higher budget and do not mind the crowded places, then the period between June and August is best for you as this is the time when tourist inflow is at its peak. Conditions are also suitable during the period between August and mid-October when the summer season is winding down. The winter season does not affect the tourist infrastructure in main areas, but most of the infrastructure located at the fringes goes into a virtual hibernation from the middle of October to the beginning of April.
2. What to Wear
During the summer season, you should carry short-sleeved shirts, shorts, sunglasses and hats. You may also need to pack a few light sweaters, as the nights are relatively cooler. If you are visiting the island during the winters, you need to equip yourself with sweaters, heavy shoes as well as water-resistant jackets and an umbrella, as the possibility of rains is very imminent. You should also note that most of the pedestrian roads are constructed from stone, making them slippery and sloppy. Make sure you have appropriate footwear.
