1. Air
Sydney airport is located just five miles from the city and it takes about 30 minutes to reach the city by taxi. You can also take a train at the Sydney Central Station that is just 13 minutes away from the airport via shuttle bus services. Coaches at the station depart in intervals of 20-30 minutes, which means that you do not have to wait for long to get to the city. Buses and taxis are also available at the airport that will take you to the main city.
Boomerang Pass
Certain international airlines offer boomerang passes to international travelers visiting Australia that allow them to travel within Australia and to selected airports in Fiji, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga and Vanuatu. Airlines that offer these passes include Air Pacific, Air Vanuatu, Australian Airlines, Polynesian Airlines and Qantas. These passes are purchased before arriving in Australia and a person is required to have a minimum of two passes.
2. Bus
Buses in Sydney are used for daily commuting, leisure, shopping, and many other purposes. These on an average, carry about 600,000 people on a network of over 300 routes. The fleet comprises of more than 1900 buses. The newest buses have ultra modern facilities such as air-conditioning and wheel chair accessibility. The basic requirements for hiring a car in Sydney are that you must be above 21 years of age and should have a valid international driving license. The AAA issues international driving license in the US. Rates depend on the type of car rental company you select.
4. Ferry
Visitors who want to explore the coastal areas of the city often prefer ferries that are easily available in Sydney. Different types of ferries operate in Sydney's coastal waters including paddle steamers and deep-sea cruise liners that operate along the vast coastal reefs. You can either buy a ticket of passenger ferries or you can book a chartered ferry if you are traveling in a group.
5. Ship
Ships connect different costal cities of Australia such as Melbourne, Hobart, Perth, Adelaide and Brisbane. Many cruise lines operate in Sydney including Cunard, Norwegian Cruise Lines, Orient Lines, P&O, Princess Lines and Silver Sea.
6. Taxi
Taxis available in Sydney provide an affordable means of transportation for local people as well as tourists. They are normally flagged down when the light on top of the taxi is lit. You will have to pay extra if the taxi is booked by phone along with toll charges, if you come across a tollbooth during your journey. All taxis are allowed to carry only four passengers and payment can be made in cash or credit card. Taxis are easily available and can be found on the main streets of Sydney, at bus and railway stations, and outside big hotels.
